What are electric swing gates?

Electric swing gates operate exactly like traditional hinged gates — but instead of pushing them open by hand, a motor does it for you. The gates are hinged to pillars on either side of your driveway entrance and swing open inward or outward depending on your space and preference.

They are the most widely installed gate type for residential properties in the UK because they suit the widest range of driveways, work with most property styles and are available in the widest range of materials, sizes and designs.

A standard double-leaf installation consists of two gate leaves, two pillars, a motor on each leaf, safety edges, photocell beams and your chosen access control — remote fobs, keypad, intercom or smartphone app.

⚡ELECTRIC SWING GATES

Is a swing gate right for you?

Does your driveway suit a swing gate?

Swing gates work well on most residential driveways but there are situations where a sliding gate may be more practical. Here's a quick guide — your local installer will confirm at survey stage.

✓ Swing gates work well when
You have clearance to swing inward or outward
Your driveway is level or gently sloped
You have pillars or space to install them
You want the widest choice of materials and styles
You want the most cost-effective automated gate option
Consider a sliding gate instead if
Your driveway slopes significantly toward the gate
You have limited clearance on both sides of the entrance
You need the gate to open very quickly for high traffic
Your entrance is particularly wide (6m+)

Swing gate materials and styles

01

Composite

The most popular choice. Flat panel construction gives a solid, contemporary look with excellent privacy. Low maintenance — no painting required. Available in any RAL colour. Styles include full panel, half panel, decorative banners, railheads and shaped tops.

02

Wrought iron & steel

The traditional choice. Vertical bar designs with decorative railheads, curves and scrollwork. Incredibly durable and suits period or rural properties beautifully. Heavier than composite — requires periodic maintenance but built to last a lifetime.

03

Aluminium

Lightweight and completely rust-proof. Available in a wide range of panel designs and powder-coat colours. An excellent choice for coastal properties or where minimising gate weight and motor load is a priority.

⚡ FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS AbOUT SWING GATES

  • What is the difference between ram motors and in-ground motors for swing gates?

Ram motors are surface-mounted units fitted to the inside face of the gate pillar — they are visible when the gate is open but are reliable, widely used and generally more affordable. In-ground motors are concealed beneath the ground at the hinge point, giving a completely clean appearance with no visible mechanism. In-ground motors are more expensive and require more precise installation but are the preferred choice for high-specification or aesthetic-focused projects.

  • Can electric swing gates open inward or outward?

Yes — swing gates can be configured to open either inward (into the driveway) or outward (toward the road or path). Inward opening is more common for residential properties. Outward opening can be useful where driveway depth is limited but requires clearance on the outside and may have highway implications — your installer will advise.

  • How much clearance do I need for electric swing gates?

As a general guide you need clearance equal to the width of one gate leaf in the direction of swing. For a 3m wide double gate (two 1.5m leaves), you need approximately 1.5m of clearance inward or outward. Your installer will assess this at survey stage.

  • How long does it take to install electric swing gates?

Most residential swing gate installations are completed in one to two days. More complex projects involving new pillars, groundworks or in-ground motors may take two to three days. Your installer will confirm at survey stage.

  • Do electric swing gates work in a power cut?

Most systems include a battery backup that keeps the gate operational for a limited period during power outages. All systems also have a manual release so the gate can be opened by hand if needed. Your installer will demonstrate this at handover.

  • How much do electric swing gates cost?

A complete installation including gate, posts and Level 1 automation starts from around £3,800 for a smaller entrance. Mid-range installations with Level 2 automation typically run from £5,000 to £6,600. See our full cost guide for a detailed breakdown by gate width and automation level.
