What are electric driveway gates?

Security, privacy and kerb appeal - all in one installation

Electric driveway gates are motorised entrance gates fitted to a residential or commercial driveway. They open and close automatically using a remote control, keypad, intercom, vehicle detection loop or smartphone app — and they do far more than just secure your entrance.

A well-specified driveway gate installation adds immediate kerb appeal, deters opportunist crime, prevents unwanted vehicles from turning in your driveway, and gives you complete control over who enters your property. For families with children or pets, the added safety of a controlled entrance is a significant benefit.

The right gate type depends on your driveway layout, entrance width and personal preference. We work with experienced local fabricators who will assess your specific situation and recommend the most practical and cost-effective solution for your property.

Gate types we install

Which driveway gate is right for your property?

The best gate type depends on your driveway layout, entrance width and how you use it. Here's a guide to help you decide — or ask your local installer at survey stage.

Electric Swing Gates

The most popular choice. Two leaves hinged to pillars, opening inward or outward. Works best where there is adequate clearance in front of or behind the gate to swing into.

Electric Sliding Gates

Slides parallel to the fence or wall — no swing clearance needed. Ideal for sloped driveways, narrow plots or where the gate needs to open quickly without taking up space.

Bi-Folding Gates

Folds back compactly against the pillars — opens fast and takes up minimal side clearance. Great for wider entrances or high-traffic properties where speed of access matters.

Automate Existing Gates

Already have gates? In many cases we can add electric motors and a full automation system without replacing the gate itself — depending on condition, weight and structure.

Why install a driveway gate?

Four reasons homeowners choose electric driveway gates

01

Security

A motorised gate is a significant physical deterrent. It prevents unauthorised vehicle access, deters opportunist crime, and gives you complete control over who enters your property.

02

Privacy

A closed gate signals that your property is private — reducing unwanted callers, preventing vehicles from turning in your driveway, and giving your home a more secluded feel.

03

Kerb appeal & value

A well-chosen gate transforms the appearance of a property. Estate agents consistently report that quality electric gates are viewed positively by buyers and can add to property value.

04

Safety & convenience

For families with children and pets, a controlled entrance adds real peace of mind. Open from your car without getting out — and monitor visitors remotely via a video intercom on your phone.

What to consider when choosing a driveway gate

Every driveway is different. These are the practical questions your installer will work through with you at survey stage — worth thinking about before you enquire.

  • How much swing clearance do you have?
Swing gates need clear space to open into — if your driveway is short or slopes steeply, a sliding gate may be more practical.
  • What is your entrance width?
Measure the gap between your existing pillars or the space where pillars would go. This determines gate leaf width and motor sizing.
  • Do you have existing pillars or posts?
New pillars can be installed but add cost and time. Existing pillars need to be structurally sound enough to take the motor load.
  • What level of automation do you need?
Basic fob operation, phone control via GSM, video intercom, in-ground vehicle detection or full smartphone app? Each level adds functionality and cost.
  • Planning permission — do you need it?
Most residential driveway gates fall under permitted development. Exceptions apply to listed buildings, conservation areas and gates over 1m adjacent to a highway. See our
    planning guide.

⚡ COMMON QUESTIONS AbOUT DRIVEWAY GATES

  • What is the most popular type of driveway gate?

Electric swing gates are the most popular choice for residential driveways — they work like traditional gates but open automatically. They suit most standard driveways and are available in a wide range of materials and styles including composite, wrought iron and aluminium.

  • How much do electric driveway gates cost?

A complete electric driveway gate installation including gate, posts and automation typically starts from around £3,800 for a smaller entrance with basic automation, rising to £8,000 or more for a wider entrance with full Level 2 automation. See our full cost guide for a detailed breakdown by gate type, width and automation level.

  • Do I need planning permission for driveway gates?

In most cases, no. Residential driveway gates fall under permitted development rights in England, Scotland and Wales. Exceptions apply where the gate exceeds 1 metre in height adjacent to a highway used by vehicles, or if your property is listed or in a conservation area. Our planning permission guide covers the rules in full..

  • How long does driveway gate installation take?

Most residential driveway gate installations are completed in one to two days. More complex projects — particularly those requiring new pillars, groundworks for in-ground motors or long cable runs — can take two to three days. Your installer will confirm timing when they survey your property.

  • Can electric driveway gates be operated from a phone?

Yes — Level 2 and Level 3 automation systems include GSM or WiFi connectivity that allows you to open and close your gates remotely from a smartphone. Level 3 systems also include video intercom access, so you can see and speak to visitors from your phone wherever you are.

  • What happens to electric gates during a power cut?

Most electric gate systems include a battery backup that keeps the gate operational during power outages for a limited period. All systems also have a manual release mechanism so the gate can be opened by hand if needed. Your installer will demonstrate this at handover.
