Costs & Prices 2026
Everything you need to budget for an electric gate installation — from basic swing gates to fully automated driveway systems. All prices include supply, fabrication and installation.
All figures are complete package estimates including gate, posts and automation. VAT not included. See full pricing tables below.
What affects the cost of electric gates?
Electric gate prices vary considerably depending on four main factors — the gate material and style, the width of your entrance, the automation system you choose, and whether new pillars or posts are needed. The tables below break each element down so you can build a realistic budget before requesting a quote.
All prices on this page are based on our Essex installer Lewis's current rates and include supply, fabrication and installation. Prices are per gate (not per leaf). VAT is not included.
What goes into the price
Composite gates and wrought iron are the main options. Style upgrades like railheads, banners and curved tops add to the base price.
Priced per linear metre — wider entrance costs more. We've grouped widths into three bands: up to 2m, 2–5m, and 5m+ to make budgeting easier.
Level 1 covers the basics. Level 2 adds safety edges, GSM control and a MAG lock. Level 3 adds app control, in-ground vehicle detection and full smart access.
Wall-mounted posts £145 each installed. Freestanding concrete-set posts £350 each. If your entrance has no existing posts, budget for two.

⚡ GOOD TO KNOW
Things that can affect your final quote
The tables above give strong indicative prices but every installation is different. Here are the factors your installer will assess at survey stage that may adjust the final figure.
• Driveway slope
Sloped driveways may require sliding gates or additional groundworks to ensure safe, level operation.
• Existing pillar condition
Old or structurally weak pillars may need reinforcing or replacing before gate motors can be fitted safely.
• Cable runs and groundworks
Long cable runs or trenching for in-ground loops can add to the installation cost.
• Access constraints
Difficult site access or restricted working space may require additional planning or time on site.
• Gate height above 2m
Gates taller than 2m require heavier motors and additional structural consideration — price on application.

Electric gate FAQs
Do the prices include VAT?
No - all prices on this page are exclusive of VAT. VAT at the standard rate (currently 20%) will be added to your final invoice. Your installer will make this clear in their written quote..
Is a site survey always needed before a quote?
Not always — if you send good photos and accurate measurements via our quote form, your installer can often provide a detailed indicative price before visiting. A site survey is always recommended before a final binding quote, particularly where new posts or groundworks are involved.
How much does it cost to add an intercom to electric gates?
A basic audio intercom is typically included within a Level 2 automation package. A video intercom with smartphone connectivity is standard on Level 3, or can be added to Level 2 — discuss with your installer at survey stage for a precise add-on cost.
Can I automate gates I already have, and how much does it cost?
Yes — in many cases existing gates can be automated without replacement. Cost depends on the gate's weight, condition and structure. Level 1 automation on suitable existing swing gates typically starts from around £1,800 for swing rams.
Are electric gates worth the money?
For most homeowners with a driveway, yes. Electric gates add meaningful kerb appeal, improve security and convenience. Well-maintained gates last 15–20 years with negligible running costs.
What is the cheapest way to get electric gates?
The most cost-effective route is a composite swing gate with Level 1 automation and wall-mounted posts, starting from around £3,800 for an entrance up to 2m wide — everything included. If you already have gates in good condition, a Level 1 automation retrofit is often the cheapest option of all.
