A look at our work

Every gate we fit is made to measure for the property it goes on. Here is a small selection of recent installations — traditional and contemporary, swing and sliding.

Electric gates in Dereham

Flint, brick and nothing square

Mid Norfolk is flint country. Boundary walls here are frequently flint with brick quoins, sometimes several centuries old, and they are the first thing to look at when an entrance is being gated — not because they are a problem, but because they behave differently to modern brickwork.

Flint walls are strong in compression and considerably weaker in lateral loading, which is precisely what an automated gate applies. A hinge bolted into a flint wall transfers force sideways every time the gate cycles, and after a few thousand cycles a wall that has stood for two hundred years can start to shed its facing. The usual answer is independent steel posts set behind or beside the wall, so the gate loads the ground rather than the historic fabric — and the work stays reversible, which planning officers prefer.

The other characteristic is that almost no older entrance here is square. Openings have widened over generations of use, walls have been rebuilt in slightly different positions, and ground falls away where it feels like it. All the metalwork is fabricated to measure rather than bought in as stock sizes, so the gate is made to suit the opening rather than the opening being altered to suit a gate.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions about electric gates in Dereham

Will my flint wall take an electric gate?

Sometimes, but it needs assessing rather than assuming. Flint is strong under compression and weaker under lateral loading, which is exactly what automation applies through the operating cycle. Where the wall will not carry it, independent steel posts can be set behind or beside so the historic fabric takes none of the strain — and that approach is reversible, which matters on older properties.

My entrance is not square. Is that a problem?

No, but it needs measuring properly. Older and rural entrances are frequently out of square, on a slope, or wider at one side than the other. Because all metalwork is fabricated to measure rather than bought as stock sizes, the gate is made to suit the opening rather than the other way round.

Do you install electric gates throughout Dereham?

Yes — our fabricator covers Dereham and the surrounding mid Norfolk villages including Toftwood, Yaxham, Mattishall, North Elmham, Shipdham and Necton, along with Swaffham and Watton.

Do you fit gates on farms and paddock entrances?

Yes. Agricultural and paddock entrances are common across mid Norfolk and are usually best served by a five-bar style gate built in steel rather than timber, since steel carries automation without dropping over time.

How quickly can I get a price?

Send your postcode, the width of your opening and two or three photographs of the entrance and your fabricator can usually give you a realistic figure within a day or two, without waiting for a site visit. A survey follows if the figure works for you.
