Where the gated properties actually are
Most of Norwich is not gate country, and it is worth saying so. The medieval core, the terraced streets of the Golden Triangle and the inner suburbs mostly open straight onto the pavement with no driveway to gate. The work here is concentrated in two places: the larger Victorian and Edwardian villas along Newmarket Road, Unthank Road and out towards Eaton and Cringleford, and the villages ringing the city.
The villa frontages come with their own question. Most have original brick or stone piers built for a hand-operated gate, and after a century they may not carry the repeated load an automated gate applies through every cycle. Where they will not, independent steel posts can be set behind them so the original brickwork takes none of the strain — and that approach is reversible, which matters in the conservation areas covering much of that part of the city.
Beyond the ring road it opens up entirely. Wymondham, Hethersett, Poringland, Brundall, Taverham, Thorpe St Andrew and the villages out along the Broads have the larger plots, longer approaches and generous frontages that suit automation well. Our fabricator covers all of it. Norwich sits at the far end of his patch, so survey dates need a little more flexibility than closer to base — but the county line and the distance are two different things, and the second matters more.

Do you cover Norwich, or only west Norfolk?
The whole county. Our fabricator is based in Boston and covers Norwich and the surrounding villages regularly. This is toward the far end of his coverage, so allow a little more flexibility on survey dates than for towns closer to base.
Will my Victorian gate piers take an electric gate?
Often, but it needs checking rather than assuming. Piers built for a hand-operated gate may not carry the repeated load automation applies in both directions every cycle. Do I need planning permission in Norwich?
Quite possibly. Norwich has numerous conservation areas covering much of the older city, and a high concentration of listed buildings, where consent is needed regardless of gate height.
