Andrew Wiles — fabricator and installer
Andrew has been fabricating and automating gates for thirteen years and has worked independently since 2020. He covers the whole of Norfolk from his base just over the county line in Lincolnshire, along with Cambridgeshire and the north-west of Essex.
All the metalwork is made in his own workshop rather than bought in as stock sizes. That matters more than it sounds in a county with this much flint, brick and centuries-old boundary walling — it means a gate can be built to fit an opening that is out of square, on a slope, or wider at one side than the other, which is exactly what you find on village properties and barn conversions.
Beyond gates he takes on structural steelwork, car ports and aluminium welding, and installs automated rising bollard systems — often the better answer on listed and conservation-area frontages where a gate will not get consent.
Norfolk is not one place
What a gate needs to cope with changes considerably between the fens, the coast and the villages around Norwich. These are the factors that come up most often.
On the coast — salt and wind
From Hunstanton round through Wells, Cromer and Sheringham, salt-laden air corrodes untreated steel and exposed frontages turn a solid gate into a sail. Galvanising before powder coating, stainless fixings and sometimes a slatted infill that lets air through are the answers.
In the fens — the water table
Around King’s Lynn, Downham Market and the Broads villages the water table sits close to the surface. Underground motors need a housing that drains, and where it cannot, an above-ground ram or arm is the sensible specification whatever the brochure suggests.
On older boundaries — flint
Flint walls are common across mid and north Norfolk. Flint is strong in compression and weak under the lateral load automation applies, so hanging a gate directly off one is rarely wise. Independent steel posts set behind keep the load off historic fabric, and stay reversible.
In Breckland — light ground
Sand over chalk around Swaffham and Thetford gives far less resistance to lateral movement than firm clay. Post foundations need to be wider and deeper, and a post that shifts even slightly throws the whole installation out of true.

You are based in Lincolnshire. Do you really cover Norfolk?
Yes, and the county line matters far less than the distance. King’s Lynn is about thirty-five miles from our fabricator’s base in Boston — closer than several Lincolnshire towns he covers regularly. Norwich and the north coast are further out, so allow more flexibility on survey dates there.
How quickly can I get a price?
Send your postcode, the width of your opening and two or three photographs of the entrance and your fabricator can usually give you a realistic figure within a day or two, without waiting for a site visit. Given the distances involved in Norfolk, that matters more here than in most counties.
Will my flint or brick boundary wall take an electric gate?
It needs assessing rather than assuming. Flint in particular is strong in compression and weak under the lateral force automation applies through every cycle. Where the wall will not carry it, independent steel posts can be set behind so the historic fabric takes none of the strain — and that approach is reversible, which helps in conservation areas.
Can you automate the gates I already have?
Often, yes, and it is worth asking before assuming you need new ones. The gates need to be structurally sound, the piers must carry the extra load, and the weight and leaf width need to fall within an operator’s range. Where all three hold it typically costs around half what a new installation would.
