Common electric gate faults we repair

Recognise your fault below? Send us an enquiry with a description of the symptoms and our local installer will diagnose and resolve it.

Motor fault

Symptoms

Gate moves slowly, stops partway, reverses unexpectedly or won't move at all.

Likely causes

Motor wear, overheating, obstruction triggering safety reversal, or motor failure. Swing gate ram motors and sliding gate motors are the most commonly replaced components.

Control board failure

Symptoms

Gate won't respond to remote, keypad or intercom. Erratic or unpredictable behaviour.

Likely causes

The control board manages all gate logic. Faults can be caused by power surges, water ingress, component failure or age. A like-for-like replacement is usually straightforward.

Safety edge failure

Symptoms

Gate reverses when there is no obstruction, or fails to reverse when there is one.

Likely causes

Safety edges degrade over time and must be tested and replaced to maintain BS EN 12453 compliance. Faulty safety edges are a safety issue — do not leave unresolved.

Intercom fault

Symptoms

No audio, no video, or no entry release from the intercom panel.

Likely causes

Wiring faults, failed handset unit, power supply issues or physical damage to the pillar-mounted panel. Audio intercoms are usually simpler to fix than video systems.

Misaligned or damaged gate

Symptoms

Gate scraping on the ground, hitting pillars or not closing flush.

Likely causes

Post movement, hinge wear, vehicle impact or ground subsidence. May require re-hanging the gate, replacing hinges or in severe cases rebuilding the pillar.

Remote or access issue

Symptoms

Remote fobs not working, keypad unresponsive or access codes lost.

Likely causes

Often a simple re-programming job or flat battery in the fob. Can also indicate a receiver fault or deeper control board issue. Most access problems are resolved in under an hour.

Self-help guide

Quick checks before booking a repair

Some gate problems have a simple fix you can try yourself. Before booking a call-out, it's worth working through these in order — if one resolves the problem, you'll save time and money.

Still not working after these checks? Book a repair and mention what you've already tried — it helps your installer arrive prepared.

1
Check the power supply
Is the control panel powered? Check the fuse or circuit breaker in your consumer unit — many apparent gate faults are simply a tripped breaker.
2
Check the remote fob battery
A flat battery is the most common cause of a fob that suddenly stops working. Replace it before assuming a deeper electrical fault.
3
Check for obstructions
Leaves, debris or a small object near the gate can trigger the safety reversal. Clear the ground around the gate path and track then try again.
4
Try the manual release
If the gate moves freely by hand after manual release, the gate itself is fine — the fault is in the motor or control system. This helps narrow down the repair.

Still not working? Book a repair and describe the symptoms — our local installers will take it from there.

Repair vs replace

Should you repair or replace your gate system?

Your installer will give an honest assessment at the visit. Here's a general guide to help you think it through beforehand.

✓ Repair makes sense when
The gate structure itself is sound
The fault is in a single component (motor, board, safety edge)
The system is less than 10–12 years old
Parts are readily available for your automation brand
→ Consider replacing when
Multiple components are failing at the same time
The system is over 12–15 years old and parts are hard to source
The gate structure is damaged or corroded beyond practical repair
Repair costs are approaching the cost of a new installation

Our local installers will give you an honest assessment at the visit. They are independent businesses — not incentivised to oversell. They will tell you plainly whether repair or replacement represents better value for your specific situation.

⚡ FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS AbOUT ELECTRIC GATE REPAIRS

  • How quickly can you repair my electric gate?

Once you submit an enquiry your local installer will typically contact you within 24 to 48 hours to arrange a visit. Most faults are diagnosed and resolved in a single visit. Where replacement parts need to be sourced, a return visit is scheduled as quickly as possible.

  • Do you repair all makes and brands of electric gate?

Yes — most of our installers work on all common gate types (swing, sliding, bi-folding) and most major automation brands including FAAC, CAME, BFT, Nice, Roger Technology and others. If your system is older or uses a less common brand, describe it when you enquire and we'll confirm coverage.

  • My gate is stuck open — what should I do?

First check power supply and fob battery (see our quick checks guide above). If the gate is stuck fully open and you need to secure your property immediately, most systems have a manual lock mechanism — your installer manual will explain how to engage it. Contact us and we'll arrange a priority visit.

  • My gate keeps reversing for no reason — is this a safety fault?

Yes — unexpected reversal usually means a safety edge or photocell beam is malfunctioning. This is a compliance issue under BS EN 12453 and should be repaired promptly. Do not disable or override the safety devices — book a repair instead.

  • How much does an electric gate repair cost?

Repair costs vary depending on the fault and parts required. Simple fixes such as fob re-programming or safety edge replacement are typically low cost. Motor or control board replacements are more involved. Your installer will provide a quote after diagnosis before proceeding with any chargeable work.

  • Will my gate need a safety re-test after repair?

Yes — any repair that involves safety-critical components (safety edges, photocells, motor force settings) should be followed by a full BS EN 12453 compliance test. Our installers arrange this re-test as standard after relevant repairs and will provide updated documentation.
