A look at our work in Scotland
Every gate is made to measure for the property it goes on. Here is a small selection of recent installations by your local fabricator.
Holds its colour through Scottish winters with none of the annual treating timber needs.
Keypad, fob, intercom or phone app — specified around how the entrance actually gets used.
Slides parallel to the boundary, so a short driveway is no obstacle.
Sandstone piers and Victorian frontages
The Glasgow properties where gated driveways are most common are the Victorian and Edwardian villas — Pollokshields, Newlands and Dowanhill in the city, and out through Bearsden, Milngavie, Giffnock and Newton Mearns. Almost all of them have existing sandstone or ashlar gate piers, and those piers are the first thing worth looking at.
They were built for a hand-operated gate weighing a fraction of what an automated one does, and after a century of Scottish weather the mortar joints are frequently softer than they look. An electric gate applies load repeatedly, in both directions, every time it cycles. Piers that have stood perfectly well for decades can start to move once that begins.
None of which means the piers cannot be used. It means they need assessing properly, and where they will not carry the load the answer is usually independent steel posts set behind them, so the stonework stays untouched and takes none of the strain. That is a judgement made at survey rather than assumed either way.

Learn more →How much do electric gates cost in Glasgow?
There are enough variables in an electric gate that a single price would be misleading, so these are starting figures rather than ranges. Each one reflects a full-size double driveway gate — 2 metres or more per leaf, at intermediate specification — rather than the smallest thing that could be built.
Prices and minimum specifications vary by region and installer. A precise quote follows a site survey, which is free and carries no obligation.

Frequently asked questions about electric gates in Glasgow
Do you install electric gates throughout Glasgow?
Yes — our installer covers Glasgow and the surrounding towns including Paisley, Bearsden, Milngavie, Giffnock, Newton Mearns, Clydebank, East Kilbride and Cumbernauld. If you are unsure whether your postcode is covered, send us an enquiry and we will confirm.
Will my existing stone gate piers take an electric gate?
Often, but it needs checking rather than assuming. Victorian sandstone piers were built for a hand-operated gate and the mortar is frequently softer than it appears after a century of weather. Where the piers will not carry the repeated load of automation, independent steel posts can be set behind them so the stonework takes none of the strain.
Do I need planning permission in Scotland?
Scotland has its own planning legislation, separate from England. Broadly a gate adjoining a road may be no more than one metre without permission, and two metres elsewhere, but Glasgow has extensive conservation areas and a great many listed buildings where consent is needed regardless. Our planning permission guide has a dedicated Scottish section.
What materials do you work in?
Composite and traditional wrought iron are fabricated in our installer's own workshop. Aluminium and timber gates are sourced from specialist suppliers and automated by him. On a sandstone villa, wrought iron generally sits far better than a modern composite panel.
How long does installation take?
Most residential installations are completed in one to two days. Where new piers or posts are needed, or the cable run requires trenching, allow two to three days. If your property is listed or in a conservation area, factor in the consent process beforehand.
