Electric gates in Paisley

A town built of sandstone

Paisley has an unusually grand housing stock for its size, a legacy of the thread mills. The villas along Glasgow Road, around Castlehead and out towards Ralston were built for mill owners and managers, and they come with the frontages to match — generous plots, wide entrances and substantial sandstone piers.

Those piers are the first thing to look at. They were built for a hand-operated gate weighing a fraction of what an automated one does, and after a century and a half of Scottish weather the mortar joints are frequently softer than they appear. An electric gate applies load repeatedly, in both directions, every time it cycles, and piers that have stood perfectly well for decades can start to move once that begins.

It does not mean the piers cannot be used. It means they need assessing properly, and where they will not carry the load the answer is usually independent steel posts set behind them, so the stonework stays untouched and takes none of the strain. On a listed or conservation-area property that approach is often preferred anyway, since it is reversible.

Pricing guide

How much do electric gates cost in Paisley?

There are enough variables in an electric gate that a single price would be misleading, so these are starting figures rather than ranges. Each one reflects a full-size double driveway gate — 2 metres or more per leaf, at intermediate specification — rather than the smallest thing that could be built.

Prices and minimum specifications vary by region and installer. A precise quote follows a site survey, which is free and carries no obligation.

Full cost guide →
Electric swing gates from £6,000
Electric sliding gates from £7,000
Cantilever gates quoted at survey
Automation & access control from £8,000
Automating existing gates from £2,000

Starting figures for a 2m+ double driveway gate at intermediate specification. Groundwork varies by site.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions about electric gates in Paisley

Will my existing stone gate piers take an electric gate?

Often, but it needs checking rather than assuming. Victorian sandstone piers were built for a hand-operated gate and the mortar is frequently softer than it appears after a century of weather. Where the piers will not carry the repeated load of automation, independent steel posts can be set behind them so the stonework takes none of the strain.

Do you install electric gates throughout Paisley?

Yes — our fabricator covers Paisley along with Johnstone, Renfrew, Erskine, Linwood, Barrhead and Elderslie, and across into Glasgow.

What style of gate suits a sandstone villa?

Traditional metalwork, generally — painted wrought iron in an open design rather than a solid panel. These frontages were built to a generous scale, so a gate can carry more height and presence than on a smaller property without looking heavy. Proportion against the existing piers matters more than the design itself.

Do I need planning permission in Scotland?

Scotland has its own planning legislation. Broadly a gate adjoining a road may be no more than one metre without permission and two metres elsewhere, with listed buildings and conservation areas needing consent regardless. Paisley has several conservation areas and a great many listed buildings. Our planning permission guide has a dedicated Scottish section.

How long does installation take?

Most residential installations take one to two days once fabrication is complete. Where new posts are needed behind existing piers, or the cable run requires trenching, allow two to three days.
