A town built of sandstone
Paisley has an unusually grand housing stock for its size, a legacy of the thread mills. The villas along Glasgow Road, around Castlehead and out towards Ralston were built for mill owners and managers, and they come with the frontages to match — generous plots, wide entrances and substantial sandstone piers.
Those piers are the first thing to look at. They were built for a hand-operated gate weighing a fraction of what an automated one does, and after a century and a half of Scottish weather the mortar joints are frequently softer than they appear. On a listed or conservation-area property that approach is often preferred anyway, since it is reversible.
