Electric gates in March

You may not need new gates at all

A fair proportion of enquiries around March come from properties that already have gates — often good quality timber or metal ones, hung years ago and operated by hand ever since. Replacing them is not always necessary. In many cases motors can be added to what is already there for a fraction of the cost of a new installation.

Whether it will work comes down to three things. The gates need to be structurally sound, without rot at the bottom rail or significant corrosion at the joints. The posts or pillars need to carry the additional load, since automation applies more force through the cycle than a hand does. And the weight and leaf width need to fall within what an operator can handle, which rules out some very heavy timber gates.

It is worth a survey before assuming either way. Automating existing gates typically runs £1,800 to £2,600 against £3,800 upward for a new automated installation, so where it is viable the saving is substantial.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions about electric gates in March

Can you automate the gates I already have?

Often, yes. The gates need to be structurally sound, the posts or pillars need to carry the extra load automation applies, and the weight and leaf width need to fall within an operator's range. Where all three hold, automating existing gates typically costs £1,800 to £2,600 rather than £3,800 upward for a new installation. See our gate automation page for detail.

How do I know if my gates are suitable?

A survey is the only reliable way, but there are things you can check yourself first. Look for rot at the bottom rail on timber gates, corrosion at welded joints on metal ones, and any movement in the posts when you push against them. If the gates sag or drag when opened by hand, they will need attention before automation is worth considering.

Do you install electric gates throughout March?

Yes — our installer covers March and the surrounding Fenland villages including Wimblington, Doddington, Benwick and Christchurch, along with Chatteris, Whittlesey and Wisbech.

Do gates need to be built differently for exposed fen sites?

Often, yes. Flat open country means a gate takes considerably more wind load than the same gate on a sheltered street. That can mean deeper post foundations, heavier sections or an infill that lets air through. It applies equally when automating existing gates, since the motor has to work against that load.

What types of electric gate do you supply and install?

Electric swing gates, sliding gates, bi-folding gates, full driveway automation and automatic rising bollards, plus automation retrofits to existing gates. All metalwork is fabricated to measure in-house.
