A look at our work
Every gate we fit is made to measure for the property it goes on. Here is a small selection of recent installations — traditional and contemporary, swing and sliding.

Mill town and river valley
Halstead grew up around the textile trade, and the old Courtauld mill on the river still anchors the town. The housing stock reflects that history — terraced streets built for mill workers, Victorian villas on the higher ground, and then a scatter of substantial period properties and converted farm buildings out along the Colne Valley.
Those conversions are usually the most involved jobs. A former farmyard or mill entrance rarely has neat brick pillars waiting for a gate; more often there are flint or brick walls of uncertain condition, timber posts, or an opening that has widened informally over a century of use. Establishing what will actually carry the load of a gate is the first question at survey, and sometimes the answer is new posts or pillars.
The valley itself brings the other consideration. Ground near the river holds water, and post foundations that are perfectly adequate on higher ground need to go deeper down in the valley bottom. It is straightforward once known, but it is not something to assume.

Do you install electric gates throughout Halstead?
Yes — our installer covers Halstead and the surrounding Colne Valley villages including Sible Hedingham, Castle Hedingham, Earls Colne, Gosfield, White Colne and Great Maplestead.
My entrance has old walls rather than pillars. Will they take a gate?
That is exactly what a survey establishes. Old flint and brick walls vary enormously in condition, and an electric gate applies considerably more load than a manual one through the operating cycle. Where the existing structure will not carry it, the options are new pillars, substantial steel posts set independently, or a sliding gate which loads the ground differently.
Does ground condition affect what a gate costs?
It can. Ground near the river holds water and needs deeper, wider post foundations than firm higher ground does, which means more excavation and more concrete. It is assessed at survey, which is one reason a quote given without a site visit is worth very little.
Can you make a gate for an opening that is not square?
Yes. Older and converted properties frequently have openings that are out of square, on a slope, or wider at one side than the other. Because all metalwork is fabricated to measure rather than bought in as stock sizes, the gate is made to suit the opening rather than the other way round.
What types of electric gate do you supply and install?
Electric swing gates, sliding gates, bi-folding gates, full driveway automation and automatic rising bollards, plus automation retrofits to existing gates where they are structurally suitable. All metalwork is fabricated to measure in-house.
