Electric Gates
Thaxted

A look at our work
Every gate we fit is made to measure for the property it goes on. Here is a small selection of recent installations — traditional and contemporary, swing and sliding.

Narrow frontages and a public highway
Thaxted is one of the most complete medieval streetscapes in Essex, and many of its properties open more or less directly onto the road. That creates a specific constraint that catches people out: a gate must not swing outward over a public highway or footway. It is not a matter of preference, and it applies regardless of how quiet the road is.
Where there is enough depth on the property, the answer is simply to hang the gate to open inward. Where there is not — and on a narrow frontage there often is not — the options are a sliding gate, which travels parallel to the boundary and needs no clearance at all, or rising bollards, which take up no space in either direction.
Beyond the town the surrounding countryside opens up considerably, with larger properties and generous approaches at Great Easton, Little Easton, Debden and Great Sampford where none of this applies. Our installer covers both, and will establish at survey which approach your frontage will actually allow.

Do you install electric gates throughout Thaxted?
Yes — our installer covers Thaxted and the surrounding villages including Great Easton, Little Easton, Debden, Great Sampford and Wimbish, along with Great Dunmow and Saffron Walden.
Can my gate open outward onto the road?
No. Gates must not swing over a public highway or footway, which includes the pavement. On properties with limited depth this rules out an outward-opening swing gate entirely. The usual alternatives are to hang the gate inward if there is room, fit a sliding gate which needs no swing clearance, or use rising bollards which take no space in either direction.
What if there is not enough room for any kind of gate?
Automatic rising bollards are worth considering. They sit flush with the ground when lowered, need no clearance to operate and change the appearance of a frontage far less than a gate does — which also makes them easier to get approved on a listed or conservation-area property. See our electric bollards page for detail.
Do I need planning permission for electric gates in Thaxted?
Quite possibly. Thaxted has a substantial conservation area and a high concentration of listed buildings, and works affecting a listed property generally need consent regardless of gate height. Gates over 1 metre adjacent to a highway also need permission. Our planning permission guide covers the rules.
What types of electric gate do you supply and install?
Electric swing gates, sliding gates, bi-folding gates, full driveway automation and automatic rising bollards, plus automation retrofits to existing gates where they are structurally suitable. All metalwork is fabricated to measure in-house.
