A town built of timber and plaster
Saffron Walden has one of the largest and most closely protected conservation areas in Essex, along with several hundred listed buildings and a concentration of timber-framed and pargetted frontages that give the town its character. Anything visible from the street here is looked at carefully, and consent is required more often than most people expect.
That shapes gate design in a specific way. Timber-framed and plastered buildings sit awkwardly behind anything heavy or industrial-looking; a lighter, more open design in painted steel or wrought iron generally works far better than a solid panelled gate. Proportion matters as much as material, since these are frontages built to a domestic scale rather than a grand one.
The villages around the town — Newport, Littlebury, Wendens Ambo, Ashdon, Radwinter and Debden among them — offer considerably more freedom, with larger plots, longer approaches and far fewer constraints. Our installer covers both, and will tell you honestly what is likely to need consent before you settle on a design.

Do you install electric gates throughout Saffron Walden?
Yes — our installer covers Saffron Walden and the surrounding villages including Newport, Littlebury, Wendens Ambo, Ashdon, Radwinter and Debden, along with Thaxted and Stansted Mountfitchet. If you are unsure whether your postcode is covered, send us an enquiry.
Do I need planning permission for electric gates in Saffron Walden?
More often than in most towns. Saffron Walden has an extensive conservation area covering much of the centre and several hundred listed buildings, and works affecting a listed property or its curtilage generally need consent regardless of gate height. Outside those areas the usual permitted development rules apply. Our planning permission guide covers the detail.
What style of gate suits a timber-framed property?
Something lighter rather than heavier. Painted steel, wrought iron or an open vertical bar design generally sits better against timber framing and pargetting than a solid panelled gate, which can look bulky against a domestic-scale frontage. All metalwork is fabricated to measure, so a bespoke design is straightforward where a standard style will not do.
You are based in Lincolnshire. Is that a problem?
It is a long-standing part of the coverage rather than an outlier — north-west Essex sits within the area our installer travels to regularly. Survey dates need a little more flexibility than for a local job, and it is worth mentioning at enquiry if you are working to a deadline. ElectriGate also works with a second installer covering the rest of Essex.
What types of electric gate do you supply and install?
Electric swing gates, sliding gates, bi-folding gates, full driveway automation and automatic rising bollards, plus automation retrofits to existing gates where they are structurally suitable. All metalwork is fabricated to measure in-house.
