Electric gates in Maldon

A hill town on an estuary

Maldon is unusual in Essex for being genuinely hilly. The town runs down from the High Street to the Hythe, and a good many properties sit on ground that falls away noticeably across the entrance. That matters more than it sounds: a swing gate opening into rising ground catches as it travels, and one opening downhill leaves an increasing gap beneath it as it swings.

The answers are to hang the gate to open the other way where there is room, re-level the immediate approach, or fit a sliding gate, which is unaffected by gradient because it travels parallel to the boundary rather than arcing across the ground. Which suits depends on the fall and on how much clear space there is to one side.

The other local factor is the estuary. Anything within a mile or so of the Blackwater sits in salt-laden air, which corrodes untreated steel and works into hinge pins and control enclosures. Galvanising before powder coating, stainless fixings and properly sealed housings are worth specifying rather than treating as an upgrade — and composite infill does not corrode at all.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions about electric gates in Maldon

My driveway slopes. Can I still have a swing gate?

Sometimes, but it depends which way and how steeply. A gate opening into rising ground will catch as it travels; one opening downhill leaves a growing gap underneath. The options are to reverse the hang, re-level the immediate approach, or fit a sliding gate which is unaffected by slope. Mention it when you enquire so it can be designed around from the start.

Will a gate near the estuary corrode more quickly?

It will if it is not specified for the setting. Salt-laden air attacks untreated steel and finds any weakness in a control box. Hot-dip galvanising before powder coating, stainless fixings and sealed enclosures make the difference, and composite infill does not corrode at all.

Do you install electric gates throughout Maldon?

Yes — our fabricator covers Maldon and the surrounding area including Heybridge, Great Totham, Woodham Walter, Danbury, Tollesbury and out to Burnham-on-Crouch.

How quickly can I get a price?

Send your postcode, the width of your opening and two or three photographs of the entrance and your fabricator can usually give you a realistic figure within a day or two, without waiting for a site visit. A survey follows if the figure works for you.

Do I need planning permission in Maldon?

Possibly. A gate adjoining a road used by vehicles may be no more than one metre tall under permitted development, which most driveway gates exceed, and central Maldon has a substantial conservation area. Our planning permission guide covers the rules in full.
